Experiments

Traveling Rainbows.

Materials:

  • washable markers

  • plastic cups

  • paper towels

Directions:

  1. Fold your paper towel in half, side to side.

  2. Cut off about one-third of the paper towel. Keep the smaller piece for later!

  3. Draw rainbow colors in blocks on one end of the paper towel. Make sure to color over the lines a few times so the dye is super bright.

  4. Do the same on the other end, and make sure the colors match up on both sides.

  5. Fill two glasses with water, but don’t fill them all the way—leave a little space at the top.

  6. Put the ends of the paper towel into the glasses. The rainbow part should go into the water, but not all the way in!

  7. Watch the colors travel up the towel! It’s like magic!

Rainbow Clouds.

Materials:

  • food coloring

  • shaving cream

  • small containers

  • pipette or dropper

  • water

Directions:

  1. Fill your small containers about 3/4 full with water.

  2. Squirt a few drops of food coloring into each container.

  3. Fill your glass jar or vase about 3/4 full with water.

  4. Now, fill the rest of the jar with shaving cream. It should look like fluffy clouds on top!

  5. Grab your syringe or eye dropper and drop the colors in one at a time. Don’t do it too fast or the colors will all mix up! You can also try adding the color to the sides of the foam for a cool effect.
